The first of our Featured Shop Friday posts is our local shop Milosport SLC, celebrating 30 years this winter! We interviewed Trevor Brady, the shop’s General Manager:
Milosport was founded in 1984 by Dimitrje Milovich who also founded Winterstick. A lot of the original Winterstick boards were made in the Milosport back room, pretty rad! The Milo experience is what sets this shop apart, really making customers feel welcome, and focusing on honesty and helping customers choose what they want and need. Everyone who works there loves snowboarding and gets hyped when customers stop in after a day on the hill to share stories of the epic runs. You’re most likely to run into the Milosport crew at Brighton Resort, enjoying the natural features and easily accessible backcountry, at Park City, or splitboarding and spending time in the backcountry building jumps or just touring around.
Look forward to free wax weekends, BBQs, and ping pong tournaments throughout the season!
Milo Demo Day in December. Come ride Brighton with the Milo crew and demo new boards and bindings to see what you’re feeling.
The Milo Pro Sale is the highlight of our year. Team riders and local pros sell their gear in a garage sale type environment in our parking lot. Each year the sale gets bigger and bigger. Last year we had about 50 people camp out in the parking lot the night before the sale. Such a good time. This happens in late August so keep an eye out for it in 2015!
Milo is the place for early-season premiers too – 2014 included movies by Celtek, Absinthe, Snowboarder, and Capita – so keep in touch to find out when more are coming.
Shop motto: “Slashing since 1984″
On Upcoming Trends: Going back to basics. More people making traditional cambered boards (or something similar), and a greater emphasis on style rather than the spin to win mentality. The companies that make the best, most simple, least kooky stuff will be the most successful. I also think more people will get into riding the mountain rather than just the park and more people will start getting into the backcountry, where the good stuff is! Hopefully we can get some new people to try snowboarding because it’s the best thing ever.
Favorite Gear: It’s hard to pick a favorite, we back everything we sell! The staff is pretty hyped on Union bindings, just about every employee owns a pair of them.
If you could invent a new piece of gear for snowboarding, what would it be? I don’t know if I’d invent something new but maybe just improve what we’ve already got. Crazy shaped boards are really fun to ride and look rad, so I’d probably make a lot of Japanese inspired shaped boards.
Milosports’ favorite local hang-outs:
* Hectors has the best burritos.
* Spedellis is a rad place to hang and they make some amazing food.
* Porcupine Pup & Grill rules.
* There’s nothing like eating at Lonestar Taqueria after riding at Brighton.
